Go behind the scenes of Aardman Animations and Sony Pictures Animation with their brand new film The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists (or if you herald from the US of A, Band of Misfits). You get the feeling that this featurette only scrapes the surface of showing just how much work goes into making the Aardman stop-motion productions, which take a year and a half to shoot. But looking at their past successes, Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run and Flushed Away, we know that the end result is worth the months or arduous tasks. In perhaps my favourite line from the featurette, Loyd Price, the Animation Supervisor on the film, summarises what working on the movie was like
“You look around at all this stuff and it’s like when you’re a kid having the best train set in the world.”
There’s also interviews with Hugh Grant (The Pirate Captain), David Tennant (Charles Darwin), director Peter Lord, writer Gideon Defoe, Senior Lighting Camera Dave Alex Riddett and producer Julie Lockhart. Although the featurette is righteously backslapping, you can’t help but admire the amount of effort and passion that goes into these productions.
Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists opens 28 March (30 March USA) and features the voice talents of Hugh Grant, Brendan Gleeson, Jeremy Piven,Brian Blessed, Salma Hayek, Lenny Henry, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Russell Tovey, Ashley Jensen and Imelda Staunton.
