The original Frankenweenie was a 30 minute short film directed by Tim Burton back in 1984 when he was still working for Disney. His second directorial effort it resulted in his dismissal from the house of mouse who labelled it too scary, a bold claim from the studio that brought us Hannah Montana! The new version of Frankenweenie is Burtons first full length stop-motion animation since 2005′s Corpse Bride. The story remains the same, junior Frankenstein brings his beloved dog Sparky back to life, but this time there’s an all star cast involved with Martin Short, Winona Ryder and Martin Landau on hand to breath life into Burton’s creations.
The first official poster is out today and it’s an effective little black & white number. Add to that the corpse-like pall of the title splashed across the bottom and the stitched-together face of the unfortunate Sparky peeking out from behind his own grave, and you can bet we’re in for some typical Burton-esque fun. Unsurprisingly the film is due out in October, just in time for Halloween. But if you can’t wait that long hunt down that dusty old Nightmare Before Christmas DVD, the original short is tucked away as an extra on most copies.
Frankenweenie is released on October the 5th
