Universal Pictures have announced a two year deal with writing and producing team Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The duo have been responsible for writing and producing some big films in recent years, collaborating with J.J Abrams on Mission Impossible 3 and the forthcoming sequel to Star Trek. They also wrote Transformers, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, the screen version of Cowboys and Aliens and they’re producing new sci-fi adaptation Ender’s Game. With their new deal with Universal the pair have lined up two reboots. The first is a reboot of the Mummy, the second is a revamp of vampire hunter romp Van Helsing. But that’s not all: the reboot of Vampire hunter Van Helsing has Tom Cruise attached to star and co-produce the picture. The last time we saw Cruise in a bloodsucker flick was as the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt in Neil Jordan‘s Interview With A Vampire, so it will be interesting to see Cruise playing a character on the other side of the vampire hunter war. Although there’s no news when these films will roll into production, with a two year deal for Kurtzman and Orci, my bet is on cameras rolling early 2013.
