Although it starts with some steamy glimpses at scenes between Michael Fassbender and Penelope Cruz, The Counsellor (The Counselor in the US) seems to be a little stranger than one might first expect, with plenty of guns, drugs, and bizarre performances from popular actors. While Fassbender and Cruz seem to be the leads in the film about a lawyer who gets caught up the high price/high risk world of drug trafficking, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, and Javier Bardem costar in colorful supporting roles.
Ridley Scott directs from Cormac McCarthy‘s screenplay, the first from the author of the novel The Road. This is Scott’s first time working with Fassbender since making last summer’s Prometheus. Real life husband and wife Cruz and Bardem are reuniting for the first time on screen since Vicky Christina Barcelona, which earned Cruz an Oscar for best supporting actress. This is also a reunion for Cruz and Diaz who costarred in the thriller Vanilla Sky in 2001. And considering the trailer for The Counsellor, Diaz is once again playing a slightly “left of center” woman, while Pitt and Bardem play villains with memorable hair.
The Counsellor, which will be dedicated to Tony Scott (who died during the film’s production), will be released in the US and Canada on October 25th and in the UK on November 15th.
