What a difference one film makes. Taking into consideration the vast majority of audiences throwing negativity DC’s way in terms of their films, it’s great to see that Wonder Woman seems to be the film to have made that breakthrough for the comic book entity on the side of movies. But while this side of things has seen a struggle for Warner Bros and DC, the video game sector has always produced plenty of great things.

Following up on their successful first game, DC have released Injustice 2, boasted a greater roster of heroes and villains, an immersive new story and plenty of customisation along the way. To say it’s every DC fans’ dream would almost be seen as an understatement as this new game is quite simply the quintessential comic book fan’s game.

Setting up a whole new story involving DC’s finest, Injustice 2 presents a world where the Justice League has disbanded and various groups have formed in its aftermath. On one side the likes of Batman, Harley Quinn, Catwoman and others have aligned, Superman is imprisoned for killing The Joker and Gorilla Grodd has banded together his own villainous squad in the form of The Society.

Then there’s the added element of a powerful new villain on the horizon. A super-entity who aided the destruction of Krypton and is after the last remnants of the planet – Superman and Supergirl. Cue plenty of powered-up battles, crushed alliances and plenty of feuds to keep us happy until the cows come home.

Continuing on from the classic gameplay of its predecessor and the likes of genre stalwarts Tekken, Street Fighter et al, Injustice 2 is the perfect antidote to those DC fans demanding more from their chosen comic book entity. Supplying us with a huge roster that is massively expanded from the first game in the series and a superb level of customisation, this new game is simply impressive in its scale.

Injustice 2, while only offering a single play narrative that clocks up around 3-4 hours, is so much more with its additional edges to this killer sword. Within that single player experience is a story that has clearly been thought out and developed with the utmost care, surprising with its various teams that have formed and featuring some truly brilliant voice work. The story feels organic, rich and exciting and certainly won’t have many players looking to use that ‘Skip Movie’ option at any point. Each battle feels of great importance and the range of choices as you go along is without doubt enough to satisfy any level of player.

Adding to the single player element too is the brilliant Multiverse option, allowing players to expand their combat within a wide range of different challenge levels, serving up rewards for upgrading and customising each available character. It’s a fantastic expansion to the overall game and will have gamers playing for hours in the hope of unlocking a special custom weapon or piece of clothing that will boost the overall experience. It’s the little things like this that help the game gain that all-important longevity.

While we haven’t yet experienced online play (mainly due to the need for upgrading further via single player mode), there’s undoubtedly a huge community for battling and we can’t wait to jump in once those level ups have been achieved.

Packing a punch with its huge roster, sending us into orbit with an impressive narrative and never ceasing to amaze with its wide range of customisation, Injustice 2 is a must-have console game and we – along with plenty others no doubt – will be addicted to this one for quite some time yet.

Injustice 2 is available on Xbox One and Playstation 4 now.
