British cinema re-locates its tradition of tough, emotional dramas from its usual urban setting into the countryside this week with the arrival of The Levelling, the first feature from director/writer Hope Dickson Leach.
Set against the backdrop of the devastating 2014 floods in Somerset, the film examines how one farming family has to face another, far more personal crisis. Game of Thrones’ Ellie Kendrick plays a young vet who returns home following the death of her brother, to find the farm dilapidated and her father shattered.
Filmoria’s Freda Cooper talked to both of them – about how winning the IWC Filmmaker Bursary has affected Dickson Leach’s career and how Kendrick often finds herself working with animals. She also looks ahead to her second film in cinemas this month, the re-make of the classic comedy, Whisky Galore! And there’s the inevitable Game Of Thrones question ……
08The Levelling is released in cinemas on Friday, 12 May. Read our review here.
