Damien Chazelle is named Best Director, and his La La Land wins Best Film at the EE BAFTAs 2017. La La Land Dances To Victory At The BAFTAs 2017

It was a golden night for Golden Age filmmaking at the BAFTAs (British Academy Film Awards) this evening, as Damien Chazelle’s universally-celebrated musical La La Land took home five masks, including the win for Best Film. Beating the likes of Moonlight, I, Daniel Blake, and Arrival, the Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone-starring favourite captivated the voters, who also awarded the film for Best Cinematography, Original Music, Best Director for Chazelle, and Best Leading Actress for Stone.

Barry Jenkins’ critically-acclaimed coming-of-ager left with precisely no awards, whilst Denis Villenueve’s audacious science-ficiton landed only a single victory for Best Sound. Meanwhile Pablo Larraín’s forensically brilliant biopic Jackie scooped a solo award for Costume Design, and Kenneth Lonergan’s profound drama Manchester by the Sea earned two wins for Best Original Screenplay, and Best Leading Actor for Casey Affleck. Elsewhere, Spider-Man himself Tom Holland was named the EE Rising Star, whilst Ken Loach’s scathingly sad Palme d’Or winner was crowned Outstanding British Film.
