Alien: Covenant star Michael Fassbender, a definite highlight of the recent X-Men movies from 20th Century Fox, is fuelling rumours of his status with the series following a recent podcast interview. And it has been a topic very much up in the air since contractual obligations for himself, James McAvoy (Charles Xavier), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique) and Nicholas Hoult (Hank McCoy), were met by the release of X-Men Apocalypse.
Speaking to Josh Horowitz, the actor was questioned on whether he would be returning for any subsequent X-Men films as Magneto. Including the next instalment, titled X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and series off-shoot – New Mutants.
“Possibly. Yeah, likely.”
Of course this couldn’t be acknowledged as confirmation, but certainly is a positive response. Fassbender’s performances across the series, beginning with X-Men: First Class in 2011, have been highly praised by critics and noted favourably by fans. So it would be no surprise if Fox were adamant to keep him on board, as well as the other 3 main cast members. Although with the newly established X-Team taking shape at the end of Apocalypse – the studio may want to go full speed ahead with a complete reinvention. Allowing stars like Tye Sheridan (Cyclops) and Sophie Turner (Jean Grey) to take the reigns.
The long running X-Men franchise has several movies in development. Including the anticipated Deadpool sequel with Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin as Cable, a proposed X-Force film and Josh Boone’s New Mutants. Which has confirmed the castings of Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams, as Magik and Wolfsbane respectively.
Dark Phoenix has a slated release date of November 2018 in the UK, with Sophie Turner currently the only confirmed returnee. With longtime series producer Simon Kinberg rumoured to be taking the directors’ chair.
