Boasting some of the brightest young acting talent today, Josh Boone’s X-Men spin off, The New Mutants, has received its first official teaser trailer. And following early reports that the film will explore a different side to the superhero genre – the results may still be a surprise to fans of the comic series.

The film centres on a group of young mutants, based on the comic book team of the same name created by Chris Claremont, as they appear to be subjected to experimentation at a secret medical institution/facility under the close eye of Dr. Cecilia Reyes (played by Alice Braga). The trailer showcases the main cast, as they are haunted by nightmarish visions and strange occurrences at the facility backed by an unnerving version of Pink Floyd’s ‘Another Brick In The Wall’. Boone has cited A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 as a source of inspiration (as well as works of Stephen King) – and this is certainly evident in a particular moment during the trailer.

Whilst on the surface it may appear like a typical horror film trailer in this generation, it’s certainly refreshing for Marvel/Fox to detour from the stalling tone of its previous X-Movies. With the success of Deadpool a couple of years ago, the studios are obviously more open to pushing the boat out and exploring different ways to portray their characters. And while nothing is clearly given away in terms of the overall plot – they’ve carved out a pretty creepy and intriguing first look…. Check out the video below.

The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split), Maisie Williams (Game Of Thrones), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) and Blu Hunt (The Originals). The film, co-written and directed by Boone, is scheduled for an April 2018 release.
