Film Review – The Cabin in the Woods

The Cabin in the WoodsMost years there are a handful of great films to choose from, depending on your tastes. But every now and then, far more seldom, a film comes along that somehow manages to come together so well that the final result is utter cinematic perfection. The Cabin in the Woods is one such film. A film that on the surface appeared to be little more than a silly horror film and turned out to be one of the cleverest, surprisingly funny films of the year so far.

The official synopsis was brief – and rightly so, for telling you anything about the plot would ruin the enjoyment of seeing it for yourselves. The tag line – If you think you know this story, think again – had a lot to live up to. After all, the story was about five friends who visit a remote cabin in the woods only to have bad things start to happen. What could possibly make it different from the norm? Well, everything.

Joss Whedon, the man behind Buffy and imminent summer hit Avengers Assemble, produced the film and co-wrote it with the film’s Director Drew Goddard (writer of Cloverfield). This incredible team have managed to create a film that ticks every box. It is immensely clever with a dry, witty dialogue and spot-on comedic timing; an impressive script full of twists, turns and surprises at every corner; brilliant direction and a seamless blend of serious drama and humour.

The cabin in the woods still

The Cabin in the Woods claims to turn the horror genre inside out; and that it does. The young cast were all relative unknowns when the film was made, but each manages to bring something unique to their respective roles. From the stoner Marty (Fran Kranz), who seems to be the unlikely voice of reason, to the bookish Dana (Kristen Connolly) and her best friend – the newly bleached blonde Jules (Anna Hutchison). Chris Hemsworth (Thor) can be seen with much shorter hair along with Jesse Williams of Grey’s Anatomy fame. There’s also excellent support elsewhere from West Wing star Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins (Let Me In, Burn After Reading).

With an acerbic wit and a darkly sick sense of humour, The Cabin in the Woods manages to be tense, scary and gory yet still fills audiences with the uncontrollable desire to laugh raucously and unashamedly. Normally, I would say it is not one for the faint-hearted as there is a tremendous amount of blood spilled – but for this film, you need to make an exception. The Cabin in the Woods is perfect in its originality and flawless blend of gore and humour. It will be studied for years to come as how to make the perfect film. A modern classic that will terrify you but still leave you grinning from ear to ear.
