Amidst the news filtering in from Cannes, The Jim Henson Company and Netflix have revealed a teaser video for their new prequel series – The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance, based on Jim Henson’s seminal film – The Dark Crystal.
The original 1982 fantasy adventure, co-directed by Henson and Frank Oz, is celebrated for its spellbinding production design, groundbreaking animatronic work, and discernible difference in tone compared to earlier Henson material. The announcement comes not long after the 35th anniversary of the film, which has garnered more of a cult following in the wake of its initially mixed critical response at release.
The Dark Crystal told the story of the last of the Gelfling race, Jen (Stephen Garlick), raised by the Mystics. As he embarks on a quest to find a missing shard of the dark crystal. A powerful gem that once brought balance to the universe. After the crystal was broken, the evil Skeksis gained power and took control – but Jen believes peace can be restored to the world if the crystal can be restored.
In the short teaser for the new series, we begin with the late Jim Henson himself. As he recalls fondly of his time making the adored film, and how much effort was put into the production. Calling it the work he is “most proud of”.
