Reported today over at Variety. British star Tom Hardy has been selected by Sony to star as Eddie Brock in their long-awaited Venom film, with Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer hired to direct.

A Venom movie has been long in development hell, since the negatively received appearance of the character in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 in 2007. But with the advent of Tom Holland, the success of his appearance in Captain America: Civil War, as well as the off-scale anticipation for new solo flick Spider-Man: Homecoming – Sony are certainly striking while the iron’s hot. With the infamous anti-hero possibly fitting into plans of a new shared Spider-Man universe.

Hardy, star of the upcoming war epic Dunkirk, is no stranger to comic book movies. He’s widely known for his portrayal of another well-known comic baddie – Bane in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. And was initially cast as Rick Flag in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. But had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with The Revenant.

Venom is considered one the greatest comic book characters of all time. First appearing in 1988, and going through several incarnations since. The character stems from a black alien symbiote that requires a host to bond with in order for it to survive. The first Venom was Eddie Brock, a constant thorn in the side of Peter Parker. Later versions have included Mac Gargan, aka Scorpion, and Flash Thompson – who joined the Avenger ranks as the more heroic Agent Venom.

The film is slated to be released in the UK on October 5th 2018. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner have been tapped to write the script. With Avi Arad, Amy Pascal and Matt Tolmach serving as producers.
