With an Academy Award nomination for his fantastic directorial return in Hacksaw Ridge (read our full verdict here), The Hollywood Reporter are, well reporting, that Mel Gibson is in early talks to helm the sequel to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.

Sources close state that Gibson – who is no stranger to working with large budgets, casts, and special effects – is currently familiarising himself with the DC Comics characters and lore, by swatting up on some serious reading. Other potential filmmakers in the loop for the supervillain ensemble include Safe House and Life director Daniel Espinosa, Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies).

Ayer’s 2016 film, which impressed financially, but took a brutal beating from critics, starred Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Viola Davis, and Cara Delevingne, many of which are believed to reprise their roles for the forthcoming sequel.
