Could Will Smith be landing the Aladdin role made famous by the late Robin Williams? Will Smith In Talks To Star As Genie In Disney’s Live-Action Aladdin

Disney’s recent output of live-action retellings of their classic animations have been on the most part received favourably. And there are no signs of it slowing down. With the recently confirmed castings of Donald Glover and James Earl Jones in The Lion King remake, Disney bigwigs are now focussing on their next adaptation – 1992’s Aladdin. With rumours surfacing that Hollywood megastar, Will Smith, has begun early negotiations to star as the Genie. A role made famous by the late, great Robin Williams.

According to Variety, Smith is looking to take on a ‘family friendly’ project, following his recent appearances in more dramatic roles over the last few years. He was recently attached to Disney’s Dumbo remake, helmed by Tim Burton, but had to drop out due to scheduling issues. So it appears the Fresh Prince legend is yearning to join the House Of Mouse. And if he is indeed cast as the Genie, few could argue that Smith’s charismatic prowess wouldn’t give a spectacular new dimension to the part Robin Williams voiced so memorably.

The original animation won two Academy Awards for its score and original song and additionally was the highest grossing film of 1992. Guy Ritchie is slated to direct the film from a script penned by John August (Big Fish, Corpse Bride).
