‘BAFTA A Life in Pictures’ is a long-running series of onstage interviews in which some of the film world’s leading talent share insights into the experiences that helped them hone and develop their craft. The series has hosted such figures as Annette Bening, Kenneth Branagh, Cate Blanchett, Viola Davis, David Fincher, Emma Thompson, Sam Mendes, Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman, Vanessa Redgrave, Martin Scorsese, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet and Jeremy Irons.

Christopher Nolan made his first feature, Following, in 1998. Nolan wrote, directed and produced the noir thriller, which was recognised at a number of international film festivals prior to its theatrical release.

Nolan first gained international attention in 2000 with the independent film Memento, which he directed from his own screenplay, based on a short story by his brother Jonathan Nolan. Starring Guy Pearce, the film garnered Nolan multiple accolades, including an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

He subsequently directed the critically acclaimed psychological thriller Insomnia (2002), starring Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hilary Swank; and directed, co-wrote and produced the mystery thriller The Prestige (2006) starring Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman.

Nolan went on to write, direct and produce the blockbuster The Dark Knight Trilogy, beginning in 2005 with Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale in the title role.  In 2008, the second film in the trilogy, The Dark Knight, was released to worldwide acclaim, receiving 10 BAFTA nominations and a posthumous win for Heath Ledger in the Supporting Actor category. The Dark Knight Rises, released in 2012, is the final film in the trilogy.

In 2010, Nolan captivated both critics and audiences with the sci-fi thriller Inception, which he directed and produced from his own original screenplay. The film won three BAFTAs in 2011 and received a further six nominations, with Nolan earning three: for Director, Original Screenplay and Film. Inception also won four Oscars and won a WGA Award for Best Original Screenplay.

In 2014 Nolan wrote, directed and produced the science-fiction thriller Interstellar, starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, John Lithgow, Casey Affleck and Michael Caine. The widely praised film won both the BAFTA and the Oscar for Special Visual Effects and received a further three BAFTA nominations.

Nolan most recently wrote and directed the epic action thriller, Dunkirk (2017), produced by Emma Thomas and Nolan, with Jake Myers serving as executive producer. Dunkirk opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea, they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in. The film features a multigenerational ensemble cast, including Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcy and Barry Keoghan, with Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy.  Nolan utilizes a mix of IMAX® and 65mm film to bring the story to the screen.
