WWE Superstar-turned-actor John Cena is back on comedy territory as he gets ready for a return visit in Daddy’s Home 2.
After a brief cameo astride a motorbike at the end of the 2015 Mark Wahlberg/Will Ferrell vehicle about competitive dads, he’s now said to have signed up for a more prominent role.
The follow-up also sees director Sean Anders back at the helm alongside co-writer John Baker. Wahlberg and Ferrell will reprise their roles as the two different father figures – one an alpha male and the other the sensitive, caring type. Once again they go head to head but, as we reported at the start of the year, they’re joined by the older generation, represented by newcomers Mel Gibson and John Lithgow.
Cena’s transition to the cinematic stage started with comedies Trainwreck and Sisters. He’s due back on screen in May, this time donning military uniform for war thriller The Wall, alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, but resumes comedy duties with Sisters co-star Ike Barinholtz in The Pact, which is scheduled for release next year.
Meantime, Daddy’s Home 2 is about to get production under way in Boston and has been given a US release date of 10th November. A date for the UK has yet to be confirmed.
