Just call him Mr Marvel (which coincidentally is not an obscure character from the Marvel Comics), otherwise known as Stan Lee, the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics, and the creator of some of the most beloved comic book characters ever.
With the ever expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe, and all of the Fox and Sony owned Marvel properties paying homage to the now 94 year old genius with a slew of cameo appearances, we thought it was about time we picked the very best out of his brief but brilliant moments on screen.
6. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Spoiler: not the first time there might be a Hugh Hefner-style Stan Lee appearance in which he is surrounded by a bevy of beauties in this list! This appearance in 2014’s surprise smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy may be fleeting and without the man himself uttering an audible word, but the voiceover from Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) in which he refers to Lee as an “old codger” is inspired!
5. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Whilst Sony’s Spidey movies have been a little hit and miss, there is no denying how wonderful Stan Lee’s appearance in this 2012 movie is! Andrew Garfield’s Spidey is fighting off a lizard monster in the background, and Stan Lee, seemingly oblivious to all that is going on around him is happily sorting some books and conducting along to a classical music track. Not only is this a wonderfully comic interlude and a break in the big fight scene, but it demonstrates the great comedic timing and physical acting of Stan Lee. Probably the best bit in the entire film
4. Deadpool (2016)
Yep, another incarnation of the Hefner-esque character played by Stan Lee which frequently crops up in the Marvel movies, this time in Fox’s R-Rated Deadpool from 2016, we have Lee as a strip club DJ and compere, who hilariously introduces the next performer on stage with a hearty “give it up for Chastity!” Stan Lee is always such a good sport with his cameo appearances, and this recent offering suits the tone of Deadpool just perfectly.
3. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Reputedly this is Stan Lee’s personal favourite out of all the Marvel cameos he has made, and it isn’t hard to see why. In this unforgettable scene, Stan Lee plays a war veteran who challenges Thor and Captain America to a drinking game involving a potent alcoholic beverage “not meant for mortal men”. Whilst we don’t see how much he consumes, we can only assume it was a little too much for him to handle as the next scene sees him being carried out by some of the other party guests! Additionally, as an extra little nod to fans, Lee gets to drunkenly slur his catchphrase “Excelsior!”. Never change Stan Lee, never change!
2. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
The recent Stan Lee cameos seem to be getting better and better, and the one in 2016’s epic MCU showdown continued this trend. Regardless of whether you are Team Iron Man, or Team Captain America, this wonderful short scene had us declaring ourselves as Team Fed Ex Delivery Guy! Stan Lee plays the aging delivery guy who rather hilariously mispronounces Tony’s name as “Tony Stank”, much to the amusement of War Machine. We’re hoping this is a nickname that sticks as well!
1. Big Hero 6 (2014)
Whilst many would be forgiven for not realising that this Disney superhero action movie is in fact also an obscure Marvel property, this end of credits sting left absolutely no doubt about its comic book connections! The father of one of the main characters, Fred, had already been teased earlier in the film when a portrait is glimpsed in his palatial home which bears more than a striking resemblance to Mr Lee himself! It is in this post-credits scene though that we get to see him properly for the first time, albeit in computer animated form, but it is absolutely glorious! There’s a fun callback to the underwear wearing habits of his son from earlier in the film and also the revelation that he might be somewhat of a superhero himself.
