Once upon a time, when people had some free time, they used their imagination to keep themselves occupied.

But since the first video games reached the masses back in the 70’s, things have changed drastically, and today the younger generation can’t even remember a time when computer games weren’t there to entertain them.

Nowadays, there are various types of games you can access without doing much more than pushing a few buttons: you have offline and online games, free casino games and real-cash slot games, multiplayer games, mobile games, and more.

The fact that you don’t have to do much more than to push a few buttons to entertain yourself changed our generation completely. What kind of changes are we talking about? Are they good or bad?

There isn’t a clear answer to those questions, but it is time to take a long, hard look at our society and how video games have changed who we are.

Video Games in Today’s Society

Video games are everywhere nowadays. Even people who haven’t had the chance to play a single video game in their entire lives know about Lara Croft, Mario, and various other characters that appeared in video games.

In fact, the video games industry has much higher revenue rates than the movie industry, which serves to show how big of a part gaming has in our lives.

Some people claim that video games are a menace to our society since they encourage aggressiveness and bloodlust. For example, back in 2013, it was reported that a young child killed his caregivers after playing a violent video game.

Also, some say that since video games came into the picture, people forgot how to communicate. Nowadays, many gamers got used to chatting with people online, and some find it hard to implement the same social skills when they talk to people face to face.

This communication block may lead to a dysfunctional society where the interaction between individuals is lacking.

Although there is some truth in those saying, it is important to remember that you should consume everything in moderation. Sure, if you spend all your spare time in front of a screen playing video or casino games, it will affect you negatively. However, if you make sure to keep yourself in check by balancing gaming with other activities – you are all good.

In fact, video games are not used for entertainment purposes only, and they can make a real difference for some people. There are a lot of educational games that can teach kids and adults alike various skills, such as problem-solving, fast thinking, etc.

Moreover, there are plenty of hospitals and rehab facilities that use gaming as a tool to rehabilitate patients. Whether you want to improve cognitive skills or physical abilities, using special games can turn a dreary rehab process to a more enjoyable one.

Many patients avoid doing the prescribed exercises because they are boring at times, but if you disguise the exercise as a game – patients tend to participate more often, which leads to a better prognosis.

In Conclusion

There is no doubt that video games change us as a society. Games infiltrated our culture with ease and changed our culture drastically, which is why some people wonder if we should welcome this change.

But at the end of the day, there is no black-or-white answer. There are good things that come with computer games and bad things as well, but we need to adjust to the changes of the times and make the most of what we have.

As a society, we need to make sure that we don’t allow gaming to keep us from communicating off the screen, and we should use it as a tool to make our lives better.
