HBO hasn’t even aired a single episode of its Harry Potter series yet, and it’s already selling the second season. On 25 September, at an official Warner Bros. event in Brazil, the studio unveiled a first-look poster for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, showing the Hogwarts Express with a suspicious streak of blue smoke. That tells you how confident HBO is about Season 1, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which lands on Christmas Day.

1. Release Date and Platform (2026, HBO / HBO Max)
What makes it stand out: HBO picked Christmas Day for the premiere, pulling the show forward from its original early-2027 slot.
Key data: Friday 25 December 2026, on HBO in the US and streaming on HBO Max in the UK, Ireland and other HBO Max markets.
Why it matters: UK fans get it the same day as the US, because HBO Max now operates here directly rather than through Sky or NOW.
The Christmas date was confirmed alongside the first teaser in March. HBO had originally pencilled the series in for early 2027, so the move to 25 December is a deliberate bet on the biggest family viewing day of the year.
For British viewers, the more important change happened earlier in 2026. HBO Max launched in the UK and Ireland on 26 March 2026, and the Harry Potter series is one of its flagship originals. According to Tom’s Guide’s breakdown of the launch, UK plans start at £4.99 a month for Basic with Ads and run up to £14.99 for Premium, which adds 4K, Dolby Atmos where available and four simultaneous streams. Standard with Ads costs £5.99 and ad-free Standard costs £9.99.
HBO hasn’t announced a UK release time yet. Big HBO premieres usually arrive in the early hours of Monday morning for UK viewers because of the US Sunday-night slot, but this one breaks that pattern (more on that below), so wait for the official time before you plan your Christmas Day.
2. Episode Count and Release Schedule (8 episodes, weekly)
What makes it stand out: HBO is giving the first book eight full episodes, far more room than the 152-minute 2001 film had.
Key data: 8 episodes; reported weekly release on Friday nights starting 25 December 2026.
Why it matters: A weekly roll-out keeps the show in conversation across January and into February instead of burning out in one weekend.
ITV News, TechRadar and Wikipedia all list Season 1 at eight episodes. Episode titles and runtimes haven’t been published.
The schedule is the more interesting part. ComicBook.com reported in May that episodes will follow weekly on Friday nights. That’s a real break from HBO tradition. The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Succession and The Last of Us all went out on Sundays. A Friday slot makes sense for a series with a big young audience: no school the next morning, and a natural family-viewing night.
If the weekly pattern holds from 25 December, simple calendar maths puts the eighth episode on Friday 12 February 2027. HBO hasn’t confirmed a finale date, though, so treat that as an estimate rather than a fact.

3. What the Second Trailer Reveals (2 September 2026, HBO Max)
What makes it stand out: It’s the first proper look at Harry’s whole first year, from the Sorting to Quidditch.
Key data: Released Wednesday 2 September 2026, roughly two and a half minutes long, timed to the annual Back to Hogwarts celebrations.
Why it matters: It shows where the series sticks to the book and where it has added material of its own.
The March teaser was mostly mood. The September trailer is the one that tells you what the show actually looks like. ITV News picked out the Sorting Hat ceremony, Quidditch, the Great Hall, flying lessons and a scene in Snape’s classroom. Empire noted that some of the Quidditch is shot in first person, which is a fun choice for a sport that the films always filmed from a safe distance.
Two moments stand out for long-time readers. We see Ron receive his Hogwarts letter, something neither the book nor the films ever showed. And there’s what Empire called “an ominous conversation” between McGonagall and Dumbledore about Voldemort’s eventual return. Both point the same way: this series is willing to step outside Harry’s point of view.
The big set pieces are all still there, too. SYFY’s breakdown confirms the troll, Fluffy the three-headed dog and Harry’s first Quidditch match. You can watch the trailer on HBO Max’s official YouTube channel and social accounts.
4. The Record-Breaking Teaser (25 March 2026, HBO)
What makes it stand out: The first teaser broke HBO’s own viewing records within two days.
Key data: Released 25 March 2026; 277 million organic (non-paid) views in 48 hours, more than double the previous HBO and HBO Max record.
Why it matters: It’s the clearest hard evidence of demand for a brand-new Potter adaptation, 25 years after the first film.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s press release on 27 March put the number at “+277 million organic (non-paid) views” across platforms in the first 48 hours. That made it the most-watched trailer in HBO and HBO Max history. The previous record holder was The Last of Us Season 2, according to Advanced Television’s report on the figures.
The teaser also confirmed the Season 1 title and the Christmas premiere. Days later, on 5 April, HBO aired Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, a roughly 30-minute behind-the-scenes special narrated by Nick Frost. It covered the casting search and the art department’s work, and it gave fans their first long looks at the professors.
View counts are HBO’s own figures, and “organic views” is a marketing metric rather than an audited one. Still, even with that caveat, it’s hard to read those numbers as anything other than a huge built-in audience.
5. The New Harry, Ron and Hermione (cast May 2025)
What makes it stand out: All three leads are unknowns, chosen through an open casting call.
Key data: Dominic McLaughlin (Harry), Arabella Stanton (Hermione) and Alastair Stout (Ron), announced in May 2025 after a casting call that opened in September 2024.
Why it matters: A seven-season plan means these three will grow up on screen, just as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint did.
HBO’s open casting call went out in September 2024, with auditions across the UK and Ireland. Tens of thousands of children took part before the trio was confirmed in May 2025. Production built a temporary on-set school to handle schooling for the large number of young actors, according to Wikipedia’s production notes.
The first production photo, released on 14 July 2025, showed McLaughlin in costume as Harry. It was the same day filming began. Since then, both trailers have put all three front and centre.
The age-appropriate casting matters more here than it did in the films. A ten-year run across seven seasons means McLaughlin, Stanton and Stout will be in their late teens or early twenties by the final book. HBO is clearly planning around that.

6. The Hogwarts Staff (Lithgow, McTeer, Essiedu, Frost)
What makes it stand out: The adult cast mixes an American screen veteran with three of Britain’s best-known stage and TV actors.
Key data: John Lithgow (Dumbledore), Janet McTeer (McGonagall), Paapa Essiedu (Snape) and Nick Frost (Hagrid).
Why it matters: These are the roles fans compare most closely with the films, and the trailers lean on them heavily.
Lithgow is the headline name. He’s spoken about the scale of the commitment: in Finding Harry he said, “I knew that when I did the first season of Harry Potter, I would be turning 80 years old.” Janet McTeer, a Tony and Olivier winner, takes over McGonagall from Maggie Smith.
Paapa Essiedu, best known for I May Destroy You, plays Snape. In the same special he recalled reading the books as a kid: “you wouldn’t be able to talk to your mates at all, because, if someone was reading faster than you were, they were gonna tell you what was gonna happen.”
HBO released a first-look image of Nick Frost as Hagrid on 15 July 2025, a day after filming started. Frost also narrated Finding Harry, which says a lot about how central HBO sees him in selling the show.

7. The Wider Cast and a Familiar Face (Warwick Davis returns)
What makes it stand out: Warwick Davis is the only actor from the film series reprising his role.
Key data: Davis plays Professor Flitwick again; the supporting cast also includes Paul Whitehouse, Katherine Parkinson, Bel Powley, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Flynn, Bertie Carvel and Luke Thallon.
Why it matters: It’s a small, deliberate bridge between the films and the series.
The supporting cast is packed with British comedy and drama regulars. Paul Whitehouse plays Filch. Katherine Parkinson is Molly Weasley. The Dursleys are Daniel Rigby (Vernon), Bel Powley (Petunia) and Amos Kitson (Dudley). Johnny Flynn plays Lucius Malfoy, Lox Pratt plays Draco and Luke Thallon plays Quirrell.
A few castings fill gaps the films skipped. Peter Serafinowicz plays Peeves, the poltergeist cut from the 2001 film. Lambert Wilson and Marthe Keller play Nicolas and Perenelle Flamel, the couple behind the Philosopher’s Stone itself. Bertie Carvel is Cornelius Fudge.
Rounding out Hogwarts are Sirine Saba (Sprout), Louise Brealey (Madam Hooch), Bríd Brennan (Madam Pomfrey), Richard Durden (Binns) and Rory Wilmot (Neville). Tristan and Gabriel Harland play Fred and George, and Ruari Spooner is Percy. If you liked our Harry Potter A-Z for muggles, you’ll recognise how many minor book characters are finally getting screen time.
8. The Creative Team (Gardiner, Mylod, Zimmer)
What makes it stand out: The showrunner and lead director both come from Succession, one of HBO’s most decorated dramas.
Key data: Showrunner Francesca Gardiner; directors Mark Mylod, Benjamin Caron and Lucy Forbes; composer Hans Zimmer with Bleeding Fingers Music; executive producers include J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and David Heyman.
Why it matters: HBO hired prestige-drama talent rather than franchise specialists.
Gardiner writes and executive produces. Mylod, who directed the Succession finale, directs and executive produces. David Heyman, who produced all eight Potter films, is back as an executive producer, which gives the series a direct line to the original adaptation.
Hans Zimmer was announced as composer in January 2026, working with his Bleeding Fingers Music collective. That’s a notable choice given how strongly John Williams’ themes are tied to the films. Whether any of Williams’ music survives hasn’t been confirmed.
Behind the camera, Holly Waddington (Poor Things) designs the costumes, Mara LePere-Schloop is production designer and Adriano Goldman is among the cinematographers. The series is produced by HBO with Warner Bros. Television, Brontë Film and TV, and Heyday Television.
9. Where It Was Filmed (Leavesden and UK locations)
What makes it stand out: The series shot at the same studio where the films were made.
Key data: Principal photography began 14 July 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire, under the working title Dark Train.
Why it matters: Real UK locations and practical effects are a big part of how the show is being marketed.
Leavesden is home to the original films’ sets and the Warner Bros. Studio Tour. Location work reported on Wikipedia includes King’s Cross station, London Zoo, Borough High Street, Wardown Park in Luton, Ashridge, Skipton, and several Cornish spots including Kynance Cove and Carnglaze Caverns.
The production has leaned on physical craft. Wikipedia’s production notes describe ten animatronic owls with 36,000 feathers each and two animatronic rats to play Scabbers. That fits what Finding Harry showed of the art department.
The budget has not been disclosed. Industry reporting describes it as very large, but no reliable figure has been published, so we’re not going to guess.

10. How Faithful Is It? (Changes from the book)
What makes it stand out: HBO calls it a faithful adaptation, but it adds scenes Harry isn’t in.
Key data: One season per book, seven planned; Ron and Hermione are introduced before they meet Harry on the Hogwarts Express.
Why it matters: Eight hours gives the show room to keep book material the films cut, and to add its own.
The book stays almost entirely inside Harry’s head. The series won’t. SYFY’s trailer analysis notes that Ron and Hermione will both be established before the train, with Ron dealing with his older brothers and Hermione struggling to fit in with other kids. The trailer also has new McGonagall dialogue encouraging Harry to make friends and follow the subjects he enjoys.
Empire described the footage as “a very faithful adaptation” with expanded material, and that seems a fair summary. Peeves, the Flamels and a broader Weasley family all suggest the show will keep a lot of what the films left out.
For fans of the 2001 film, the useful comparison is time. Chris Columbus had 152 minutes. Gardiner has eight episodes. That’s the real reason to expect a different experience, not just a recast one.

11. Season 2 Is Already Moving (Chamber of Secrets)
What makes it stand out: HBO renewed the show seven months before Season 1 airs.
Key data: Renewed 6 May 2026; Kit Harington cast as Gilderoy Lockhart; Billy Barratt (Tom Riddle), Lenny Rush (Dobby) and Bonnie Hill (Ginny) announced 4 September 2026; first-look poster revealed 25 September 2026.
Why it matters: It answers the obvious worry about a ten-year plan: HBO is committing early.
Variety reported the renewal on 6 May, along with the promotion of writer Jon Brown to co-showrunner. Gardiner said that “bringing on a co-showrunner is the key to maintaining our momentum.” Kit Harington joined as Lockhart in August, replacing Nicholas Hoult, who had been attached to the role.
The September casting round matters for the long game. Billy Barratt, an International Emmy winner, plays the young Tom Riddle. Lenny Rush, 17, plays Dobby, which may point to a performance-led approach rather than pure CGI. Bonnie Hill takes over Ginny from Gracie Cochrane, who appears in Season 1. The adult Voldemort still hasn’t been cast.
Don’t expect Chamber of Secrets in December 2027, though. HBO chairman Casey Bloys has said, “It’s not going to be two years [between seasons], but we’re trying hard to keep it as compressed as possible.” Fans have been reading the blue smoke on the new poster as a nod to the flying Ford Anglia, which is a fair guess but not confirmed.

12. The Controversies Around the Series
What makes it stand out: Few family shows have arrived with this much debate attached.
Key data: J.K. Rowling is an executive producer; Paapa Essiedu has spoken publicly about racist abuse and threats he received after his casting.
Why it matters: Some viewers will decide whether to watch based on these issues, not the trailers.
Rowling’s involvement has drawn criticism because of her public statements on transgender issues. HBO has stood by her executive producer role throughout. Some fans have said they’ll skip the series for that reason, while others have separated the books from their author. It’s a personal call, and the show will be judged both ways.
The reaction to Essiedu’s casting has been uglier. He has spoken about receiving racist abuse and threats after being announced as Snape, with some of it pointing to the character’s description in the books. His role hasn’t changed, and he features prominently in both trailers and the Finding Harry special.
None of this changes the release date or the cast. It does mean the series will be argued about well beyond the usual “book versus film” debate, and HBO’s marketing has kept its focus firmly on the craft and the young cast.
Should You Be Excited?
Yes, with sensible expectations. HBO has given Philosopher’s Stone eight episodes, a Succession creative team, Hans Zimmer and a cast built around three newcomers and some of Britain’s best character actors. UK fans can watch it on HBO Max from 25 December without any workarounds. What we don’t know yet is the UK release time, episode runtimes or how much of John Williams’ music survives. We’ll update this page as HBO confirms more. For everything else heading to streaming, see our Upcoming OTT Releases roundup, plus our spotlights on Ahsoka Season 2 and Percy Jackson Season 3.
