Interviews 29th July 2024 Liz Rodriguez 0
Stunt actor Kapeesh Mourya is no stranger to the bright lights of Hollywood. The India-born lead stunt actor has appeared in numerous productions so far and is Hollywood’s hottest young talent to watch.
Filmoria caught up with Kapeesh to talk about his latest stunt work on the movie, ‘Alpha’.
Hey Kapeesh! Welcome to Filmoria. Before we dig in, what has been the pros and cons of pursuing your stunts and acting career?
Hey! I think the Pros are you feel like a badass person. You get to see and learn the actual hard work and the process that goes behind those action scenes. How the smallest details make a great impact. The only con is that injuries happen, and I just take that as an opportunity to for a great story.
I am an actor and action star and the only con for me right now is that I am unable to do it every second of my life.
Has there been one particular moment in your career that you’re most proud of?
To be very honest I am the kind of person who is always looking for the next big thing, the next project. In particular no. I can’t narrow it down to one moment. Every project is a proud moment, every move that makes it to the final cut is a proud moment.
Tell us about the project ‘Alpha’.
Alpha is about a guy who is determined to get a girl who has left him, but he has a weak mindset. While watching a YouTube video of an influencer he gets a vision of the guy from the video motivating him he starts to train and fight his own self to fight his fear and become the best version of him.
What character do you play?
My role was to be the stunt person in a fight sequence where this person is fighting himself. The fight was a boxing sequence where he is pushed down and beaten up by the alpha version of himself and has to defeat him to become the “alpha”. Like reaching for the better version of yourself.
Are you like your character?
Yes, in most ways yes, I do have the tendency to keep pushing myself to a better place in life and that’s exactly what this person in the film was trying to do, but a huge part of this role was showing the emotion with just your body language as I had to play the beta version and the alpha version as a stunt double.
How did you prepare for the role?
I was the fight choreographer for this fight alongside under guidance of Mr. Orion Barnes. The fight choreography took a week to dial down all the final moves, and I had to make sure that a person with no experience of boxing could do them and then came the difficult part of teaching the actor the entire choreography and making sure we were hitting the marks while keeping a safe space to avoid injuries.
The choreography had some actual contact hits, so we had to be very careful with the power with what we hit while keeping the intensity of the emotions to the top.
Wow! Fight choreography is so precise. Can you share any fun facts about the project?
The entire crew was fun to work with, they were all very enthusiastic and will to go as long as it took to make this happen. And there was this take that was capturing my behind and I still remember the director going. Nice ass. That just threw me off as I was preparing to do a fight scene.
How did you get involved?
I’m a part of a stage combat group called Sword Fight Inc. (SFI) and they were approached by the American Musical and Dramatic Academy for this project and the founder of SFI Mr. Danner put me forward for the job and then I delivered. We filmed in a boxing gym in Camarillo in Southern California.
Tell us something fun about yourself!
Ok! I know how to cook, and I don’t mean cereal like I can actually cook. I have never smoked or had alcohol. Alcohol if you don’t include cough syrup, and I love to go karting – I love speed and cars and working on cars.
What else do you have going on?
I have a romantic comedy project Stood Me Up coming up on deck and another action-packed project after that.
