There have been some remarkable films packed with gambling references and casino scenes. Some film narratives are tied closely to the world of casinos and gambling than others, but any inclusion of a casino can make a big difference.

James Bond is not a series of films about gambling, but there are some famous casino scenes from the franchise which enhance the main character, excitement and even the comedy. Then, of course, there are classic films about gambling such as Oceans Eleven, The Gambler and De Niro’s Casino, which are littered with impressive casino scenes.

But why do casino scenes add excitement to a movie whether the film is about gambling or not?

Split-Second Excitement

The outcome of casino games is decided in a split second. When the roulette ball stops or when a card is turned. Anyone who has played at an online casino or likes to play blackjack online will know this. It just takes a quick moment for anything to happen. Directors love the casino as a movie scene because it helps them build up the excitement. What happens on the table may be massively important to the characters and narrative. The casino is unique in being able to build suspense and drama in this way.

The Luxury Factor

Some of the best casinos in the world will often feature in the best films. Expect to see some sophisticated casinos settings from Monaco and other classic establishments. By placing characters in these settings, directors get to make the characters dress to impress. This is a way to increase the aesthetic appeal of their personalities and increase excitement through sexy scenes. Often these luxury casinos are not somewhere filmgoers would go due to cost. By including them in the film, it gives viewers a unique look into a world they have never explored. And that’s exciting!

The Relatable Factor

On the other hand, many of the classy casinos on films are welcoming to people of all walks of life. This is especially true of many Vegas casinos. Las Vegas is a prime spot for filmmakers because it is relatable to people, even if they have yet to visit. It allows people to experience the Vegas lights and buzz without leaving home. However, people may watch these films in anticipation of their own holiday to Vegas and the casinos.

A Place of Dominance

Money is power. What better way to assert a character’s dominance by placing them in a casino gambling vast sums of money without a care in the world? This is often done to show that one character is a ringleader and dominating the rest. This makes the casino a fantastic place for the dominant figure to be challenged by an outsider, someone entering their casino lair.  And that’s also very exciting!

These are all reasons why the casino is an exciting location to shoot a film scene. The scenes are often real, and sometimes the film narratives are authentic too!
