Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is out now on Netflix. All 10 episodes of the Studio Trigger and CD Projekt Red anime arrived worldwide on Tuesday 20 October 2026, including on Netflix UK. It’s a standalone story set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, with a new cast led by the washed-up edgerunner Weak Kingsley, and it’s directed by Kai Ikarashi rather than original director Hiroyuki Imaishi.

This is a list of the ten things worth knowing about Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 on launch day, from the release details and the new characters to the creative team, the music, the first season’s numbers and what the show could do for the games.
We’ve ordered the list the way most viewers will want it: how to watch first, then who’s in it and who made it, then the trailers and early reactions, then the bigger picture for Netflix, CD Projekt Red and the Cyberpunk franchise. Every figure is from CD Projekt Red, Netflix or trade reporting, and where a detail hasn’t been confirmed we say so.
One number frames all of it. The gap between the two seasons is 1,498 days. That’s longer than it took CD Projekt Red to turn Cyberpunk 2077 from a broken 2020 launch into a game that’s now sold more than 40 million copies, and the first Edgerunners is a big part of why that turnaround happened. Filmoria’s read, before anyone has finished the binge: this is the most commercially loaded anime release Netflix has had in years, because it’s selling a game as much as a show.
1. The Release (20 October 2026, Netflix)
What makes it stand out: Netflix is dropping the whole season at once, worldwide, exactly as it did with the first Edgerunners.
Key data: 10 episodes, released 20 October 2026; the date was confirmed at Anime NYC on 20 August 2026 and by CD Projekt Red’s press site.
Why it matters: A full-season drop means the conversation, the spoilers and the Top 10 numbers all land in the same week.
The road to today has been long and fairly well signposted. Edgerunners 2 was announced at Anime Expo in Los Angeles in July 2025, with a logo, a poster and a short teaser. A release window of “fall 2026” followed at the end of June 2026, alongside a second teaser. The exact date only came on 20 August, when Netflix used its main-stage panel at Anime NYC in the Javits Center to show a new teaser and confirm 20 October.
Netflix has stuck to the binge model here, and that isn’t a given any more. Disney+ is releasing VisionQuest two episodes a week this month, and plenty of streamers now prefer to stretch a season out to keep subscribers around. For a 10-episode anime with a cult following, though, the all-at-once approach makes sense. The first season’s word of mouth was built on people watching all ten episodes in a weekend and then telling everyone they knew about the ending.
For UK viewers, the practical detail is timing. Netflix originals normally appear at midnight Pacific, so the season should have been live from around 8am BST this morning. The clocks don’t go back until Sunday 25 October, so that’s still British Summer Time.

2. A Standalone Story (New Cast, Same Night City)
What makes it stand out: This isn’t a continuation of David Martinez and Lucy’s story; it’s a fresh tale in the same city.
Key data: CD Projekt Red describes it as “a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge”, told across 10 episodes with an entirely new cast of characters.
Why it matters: Newcomers can start here without having watched the first season, which is a big deal for Netflix’s audience numbers.
Anyone who’s seen the end of the first season will understand why there’s no direct sequel. It’s not a story that leaves the door open. So CD Projekt Red and Trigger have gone down the anthology road instead, keeping the setting, the tone and the rules of the world while swapping out everyone in it.
That’s a smart call for a couple of reasons. It protects the first season’s ending, which fans are still very attached to four years on. It also turns Edgerunners into something closer to a brand than a single story, a way of telling different Night City tales on Netflix every few years while the games carry on in parallel.
The risk is obvious, too. A lot of the first season’s pull came from caring about David and his crew. A brand-new ensemble has to earn that from scratch in ten episodes, and “redemption and revenge” suggests a darker, harder-edged story than the coming-of-age tragedy fans fell for. Early reactions, which we cover in item 7, suggest the team knows it’s making a different kind of show.
3. Weak Kingsley (The Washed-Up Legend)
What makes it stand out: The lead isn’t a kid on the way up but a former star on the way down.
Key data: Voiced by Clancy Brown in English and Kentaro Tone in Japanese; Netflix’s synopsis calls him a washed-up cyberpunk legend now forced to live without chrome.
Why it matters: Building the season around a burnt-out veteran flips the first season’s structure on its head.
Weak Kingsley was the first new character CD Projekt Red revealed, back in late June 2026. He was once a well-known edgerunner and now lives in the shadow of his past glory. The detail that he’s living “without chrome”, meaning without the cybernetic implants that make edgerunners what they are, is the most interesting thing about him. In Night City, chrome is power. A legend without it is just a man with a reputation and a lot of enemies.
Casting Clancy Brown in the English dub is a statement. He’s one of the most recognisable voices in the business, from Mr Krabs in SpongeBob SquarePants to a long list of villains and hard men across film, TV and games. He also played Lieutenant Hank Anderson in Detroit: Become Human, which makes him the second actor from that game to join the Cyberpunk universe. On the Japanese side, Kentaro Tone takes the role.
Our take: a grizzled, fallen-from-grace lead gives Edgerunners 2 a very different emotional engine. The first season was about ambition and what it costs. This one, by the sound of it, is about what’s left when it’s all been spent.
4. D, Talia Yang and Roman Carax (The New Crew)
What makes it stand out: The supporting trio covers three corners of Night City: a netrunner, a gang member and a filmmaker.
Key data: D is voiced by Nazeeh Tarsha (English) and Koki Uchiyama (Japanese); Talia Yang by Kimoy Lee and Akari Kito; Roman Carax by Valeria Rodriguez and Momoka Terasawa.
Why it matters: Each character ties into a different part of the Cyberpunk 2077 world, which gives game players plenty to recognise.
D is a netrunner from Snake Nation who’s hunting the killer who wiped out his clan. That’s the revenge half of the “redemption and revenge” pitch, and it sounds like he and Weak are on a collision course long before they’re on the same side. Koki Uchiyama, who voices him in Japanese, is a big name in anime voice acting.
Talia Yang is an independent member of Maelstrom, the chrome-obsessed gang that game players will remember from the early hours of Cyberpunk 2077. Coverage at the time of her reveal described her as the show’s first female lead. In Japanese she’s voiced by Akari Kito, best known internationally as Nezuko in Demon Slayer.
Roman Carax is a young cinephile who documents other people’s lives on camera. It’s a neat device for a show like this, a character literally filming Night City as it eats people alive. Valeria Rodriguez voices Roman in English.
There’s one more name to watch. Bleeding Cool reported in June that a mysterious fifth character was still being kept back, and one later report says Daniel Wu voices a new character called Kirill Yang. We’ve only seen that claim in a single source and Netflix hasn’t confirmed it in anything we’ve read, so treat it as unconfirmed until the end credits settle it.

5. Kai Ikarashi Takes Over (Studio Trigger)
What makes it stand out: Hiroyuki Imaishi, who directed the first season, has handed the job to a younger Trigger animator making his series directing debut.
Key data: Ikarashi directed episode 6 of the first season, “Girl on Fire”, and was also its storyboard artist and animation director; the scripts come from Bartosz Sztybor of CD Projekt Red and Masahiko Otsuka.
Why it matters: A change of director at a studio as distinctive as Trigger usually means a change of style.
Imaishi is close to the face of Studio Trigger. He directed Kill la Kill and Promare, and his loud, kinetic style was all over the first Edgerunners. Passing the chair to Kai Ikarashi was done publicly at Anime Expo 2025, where Ikarashi appeared in a recorded video message and a “Director’s Voice” clip.
Fans will remember episode 6 well. It’s one of the first season’s big turning points and one of its most emotional episodes, so Ikarashi isn’t exactly an unknown quantity. His other credits include storyboarding and directing on episode 10 of Tengoku Daimakyo (Heavenly Delusion).
The writing team gives the show continuity. Bartosz Sztybor is a CD Projekt Red writer who has also written Cyberpunk comics for the studio, and Masahiko Otsuka is a long-time Trigger collaborator. That pairing matters because the first Edgerunners worked partly because it felt true to the game’s world. Keeping a CD Projekt Red writer in the room should keep the lore tight even with a new director.
6. The Music (Rico Nasty and Tsuneo Imahori)
What makes it stand out: The season’s signature track is a metal-tinged song from rapper Rico Nasty, a long way from the first season’s dreamy synth-pop.
Key data: “You Can’t Run From Me” was released by Milan Records in late June 2026; it was written by Maria Kelly and Drew Polovick, produced by Polovick and performed by Rico Nasty, and the trailer music also included original score by Tsuneo Imahori.
Why it matters: Music was one of the main reasons the first season went viral, so the soundtrack is a big part of how this one gets talked about.
It’s hard to overstate how much the first season’s music did for it. Rosa Walton’s “I Really Want to Stay at Your House” became a phenomenon, and its official music video passed two million YouTube views in under two weeks. The first season’s score came from Akira Yamaoka, the Silent Hill composer, and Marcin Przybyłowicz, who scored The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, and the soundtrack later got a vinyl release.
“You Can’t Run From Me” goes somewhere else entirely. Reviews of the track describe it as a metal song at heart, with heavy guitars and industrial synths, and Rico Nasty’s rap flows on top. It debuted in the first full trailer at the end of June and is already on Spotify and Apple Music.
We haven’t seen confirmation that Yamaoka or Walton are back for this season, so we won’t claim they are. What the trailer credits do confirm is Tsuneo Imahori, a guitarist and composer with a long anime career, which fits the heavier, grungier sound the marketing has been leaning into.

7. The Trailers and First Reactions (Anime Expo 2026)
What makes it stand out: About 6,000 fans saw the first episode at Anime Expo in July, and they kept it spoiler-free for more than three months.
Key data: The premiere episode screened on 3 July 2026 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles; seven minutes of footage followed at Anime NYC in August, and a final trailer with dialogue arrived in October.
Why it matters: Early word from critics who’ve seen the opener is strong, but it’s based on one episode only.
CD Projekt Red publicly thanked the Anime Expo crowd for not spoiling the episode, which is a nice detail in itself. The screening wasn’t recorded or streamed, so for most fans the only material before today was the trailers.
The press who were in the room were positive. Gizmodo’s Isaiah Colbert called the debut episode exhilarating and said it opens out into a bigger story while still feeling intimate. Polygon’s Ryan Epps described a darker entry with strong visuals and sound design. Kotaku’s take was that this season is “a very different beast from its predecessor”, which could be read either way.
The marketing has followed a clear arc. The June teaser was violent and chaotic and carried the Rico Nasty track. The Anime NYC teaser closed on the line “Night City will burn again.” The final trailer, released last week, was the first to include spoken dialogue, and much of it reused earlier footage alongside new shots.
Our verdict on the campaign: it’s been careful. Netflix and CD Projekt Red have shown a lot of style and very little story, which suggests they’re protecting twists, not hiding a weak script. That’s a guess, though, and the full season will answer it this week.
8. Season 1’s Numbers (2022, Netflix)
What makes it stand out: The first season was a rare anime that crossed over to a mainstream Netflix audience and swept the anime awards.
Key data: 14.88 million hours watched in its first week (per CD Projekt Red), 47.75 million hours across four weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10, a 100% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and Anime of the Year at the 2023 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
Why it matters: This is the bar Edgerunners 2 will be judged against, both by fans and by Netflix’s own data team.
The 14.88 million first-week figure came from CD Projekt Red’s global PR director rather than from Netflix itself, so it’s worth keeping that in mind. The 47.75 million hours over four weeks comes from Netflix’s own Top 10 data, as tracked by What’s on Netflix.
The awards haul was huge. At the Crunchyroll Anime Awards in Tokyo in March 2023, Edgerunners beat the likes of Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan to Anime of the Year, in a vote that drew 18 million fan votes from 200 countries and territories. Zach Aguilar also won Best VA Performance (English) for playing David.
Netflix now reports views (hours divided by runtime) rather than raw hours, so direct comparisons with 2022 won’t be perfectly clean. For context, our own coverage this month of Netflix’s Below and its record debut shows how Netflix frames a hit these days. For Edgerunners 2, the realistic test is whether it can crack the global English or non-English TV Top 10 in its first full week and hold on for a month, as the first season did.

9. The Game Effect (Cyberpunk 2077 and Cyberpunk 2)
What makes it stand out: The first season revived a game that had been written off, and CD Projekt Red will be hoping for a repeat.
Key data: Cyberpunk 2077 hit 104,827 concurrent Steam players in September 2022, beating The Witcher 3’s all-time Steam peak of 103,329; the game passed 40 million sales on 3 July 2026, up from 35 million in November 2025.
Why it matters: Edgerunners 2 is also a marketing machine for the next game, Cyberpunk 2.
The 2022 bounce is now part of games industry history. Cyberpunk 2077 launched on 10 December 2020 in a state that got it pulled from the PlayStation Store. Nearly two years later, the anime arrived at the same moment as the game’s 1.6 update and a half-price Steam sale. Player numbers jumped to levels the game hadn’t seen since launch week. The patch and the discount helped, but most reporting at the time put the anime at the centre of it.
Since then, the Phantom Liberty expansion and the 2.0 update have done the rest. Cyberpunk 2077 has gone from punchline to one of CD Projekt Red’s biggest sellers, and the July 2026 milestone of 40 million copies, counting standalone copies and the Ultimate Edition, was announced on the same day the Anime Expo crowd saw the new episode.
The sequel is the long game. Cyberpunk 2, previously known as Project Orion, had 163 developers working on it at the end of April 2026. CD Projekt Red hasn’t given a release date. Analysts at Noble Securities have estimated late 2030 with a budget of around $419 million, but that’s an analyst estimate, not a company date. A popular Edgerunners 2 keeps the brand warm for four more years, and it’ll probably give the 2077 player count another lift this week as well.

10. What Comes Next (Netflix, Trigger and CD Projekt Red)
What makes it stand out: Nothing beyond this season has been announced, but the anthology format makes more seasons easy to picture.
Key data: No Edgerunners 3 has been confirmed; the gap between the first two seasons was just over four years.
Why it matters: Viewing numbers over the next 28 days will decide whether Night City becomes a regular Netflix fixture.
Netflix is in a busy stretch for genre streaming. Prime Video has Blade Runner 2099 landing on 25 November, so this isn’t the only big cyberpunk-flavoured series heading to UK screens before Christmas. Edgerunners 2 gets a five-week head start.
The standalone format is the key to what happens next. Because the show doesn’t depend on any one character surviving, Netflix and CD Projekt Red could commission another Night City story with a different crew whenever the numbers justify it. Whether they’d go back to Trigger, or let another studio have a crack, is an open question nobody’s answered on record.
The one thing we’d bet on is timing. CD Projekt Red has shown it likes to line up its anime with big moments for the games. If there’s a third Edgerunners, don’t be surprised if it lands close to Cyberpunk 2’s marketing push rather than on Netflix’s usual renewal schedule.

Our Take
Edgerunners 2 had about the hardest act to follow in recent anime. The first season was a surprise. This one isn’t, and that changes everything about how it’ll be judged. The smart choices are already visible: a standalone story that protects the original’s ending, a fallen veteran instead of another kid on the rise, a director who made one of the first season’s best episodes, and a soundtrack that doesn’t try to copy “I Really Want to Stay at Your House”. Whether it adds up to something as good is a question for the binge. If you loved the first season, it’s the obvious thing to watch this week on Netflix UK. If you’ve never seen it, you can start here.
