One of last year’s biggest and most ghoulishly pleasant surprises was the big-screen Goosebumps adaptation, which saw Jack Black take on the role of best-selling author R.L. Steine. The Rob Letterman-directed horror comedy was quite frankly a delight; paying wonderful homage to the beloved source material, and designed with a distinctly 80s retro theme.
Well, in 2018, prepare to be scared again as Sony Pictures have officially confirmed Goosebumps 2 is forthcoming, with a planned release date of January 26th, 2018.
Letterman is set to return alongside Goosebumps‘ writer Darren Lemke. Sony also wants Jack Black to come back as and reprise his hilarious role as Stine and while nothing is confirmed yet, he is apparently expected to return to the role. While Black is in talks to come back, there’s no word yet on the return of the young cast members, or whether the sequel will follow the lead of the books by focusing on a new group of children to save the day.
The 2015 film (released in early 2016 here in the United Kingdom) returned a respected $150m box office take against a $58m budget. It had an even more successful run on home video – but more importantly, a legion of Goosebumps books fans eager for more. Filming is due to begin this year.
