1. Release Date and Platforms (19 November 2026, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S)

What makes it stand out: After two delays, the date has now held firm for almost a year and Rockstar has repeatedly brushed off fresh delay rumours.
Key data: Out 19 November 2026 worldwide on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a PS5 Pro Enhanced tag on the PlayStation Store listing.
Why it matters: It’s the first brand-new mainline Grand Theft Auto since GTA V in September 2013, a gap of more than 13 years.

Let’s start with the thing everyone asks first. Grand Theft Auto VI is out on Thursday 19 November 2026, and as of this weekend nothing official suggests that date is moving again. Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick has reconfirmed it on earnings calls, and Rockstar quietly knocked back a viral 4chan delay rumour earlier this year without changing a thing.

It’s a console-only launch. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S owners can play it day one, and the PlayStation Store page now carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced label, which tells you Sony’s pricier box will get some form of visual or performance boost. Rockstar hasn’t said exactly what that means in frames or resolution yet.

There’s no Switch 2 version and no PS4 or Xbox One version either. That last point might seem obvious in 2026, but GTA V famously launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 before hopping to the newer machines. This time Rockstar has built for current hardware only, and the Extended Look footage was captured entirely on a standard PS5.

Sony is clearly treating it as a system-seller. PlayStation’s own blog post from 24 June carried the headline “Grand Theft Auto VI plays best on PS5 November 19”, which is about as loud as a platform holder gets about a third-party game.

2. The Game Informer Cover Story (25 and 29 September 2026)

What makes it stand out: It’s the biggest press deep dive on GTA VI so far, built on interviews with the people making it.
Key data: Cover revealed 25 September; 14-page digital issue live 29 September with 12 exclusive screenshots and original cover art of Jason and Lucia.
Why it matters: It’s the newest official information about the game, and most of what follows in this list comes from it.

Game Informer revealed its GTA VI cover on 25 September and published the digital issue four days later, with print copies following over the next few weeks. Senior associate editor Marcus Stewart spoke to several of Rockstar’s lead designers, and the piece is mostly about place: how the studio built Leonida, how it researched Miami and the rest of Florida, and why it thinks this is “the most culturally and aesthetically accurate and lifelike world to date”.

That focus tells you something about Rockstar’s marketing plan. The Extended Look in August was about action: shootouts, chases, a robbery going sideways. The Game Informer story is about texture. Weather. Animals. The feel of a Florida afternoon when the sky turns purple at 4pm and the rain arrives sideways. It’s the kind of detail Rockstar fans pore over, and it’s a sensible way to keep the conversation going in the quiet weeks before launch.

The 12 new screenshots went straight into fan galleries, and they’re the freshest official images of the game anywhere. If you only read one thing about GTA VI before November, the cover story is probably it.

3. Leonida, Rockstar’s Biggest Map (Six Regions, Roughly Twice GTA V)

What makes it stand out: Rockstar has put a number on the size for the first time, instead of leaving it to fan mapping projects.
Key data: Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut says Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA V’s map, split into six main regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.
Why it matters: It’s the studio’s largest world yet, and the series’ broadest setting since San Andreas spread itself across a whole state in 2004.

GTA V’s Los Santos and Blaine County was already huge. Leonida is meant to be about double that, and it’s not just one sprawling city. Vice City is the headline, obviously, a neon-soaked Miami stand-in that series fans first visited in 2002. Around it sit the Leonida Keys (the island chain), Grassrivers (Rockstar’s version of the Everglades), Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and the forests of Mount Kalaga National Park.

The trailers had already shown swamps, beaches, highways, small towns and a packed nightclub strip. What the Game Informer piece adds is Rockstar’s own framing: this is meant to feel like all of Florida, not just the postcard version. The Extended Look backed that up with busy beaches, gridlocked highways and noticeably more pedestrians and background activity than GTA V ever managed.

Size alone doesn’t make a good open world, of course. Red Dead Redemption 2 worked because every corner felt lived in, not because it was big. The early signs suggest Rockstar is going for the same density here, and the next two items are a big part of that.

4. A Rebuilt Weather System (Localised Storms and Hurricanes)

What makes it stand out: Weather can now differ across the map at the same moment, so you might see rain hammering down a short drive away while you stand in sunshine.
Key data: Rockstar’s vice president of art for lighting and rendering, Owen Shepherd, says the team “re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent”, with tropical storms and hurricanes confirmed.
Why it matters: Florida’s weather is part of its identity, and a static sunny sky would have made Leonida feel fake.

Anyone who’s been to Miami knows the afternoon storm routine. Bright blue sky at lunch, a wall of cloud by mid-afternoon, a downpour, then steam rising off the tarmac twenty minutes later. Rockstar wants that rhythm in the game.

According to the cover story, Leonida has fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the map, ranging from “the clear blue skies of a Miami winter” to towering cumulonimbus with lightning. There’s a new wind system too, with offshore breezes after sunset, convection updrafts and buildings blocking the wind. Hair and debris swirl on rooftops. Gusts ripple the water and bend the grass in the swamps.

Hurricanes and tropical storms are the headline addition. Rockstar hasn’t said how often they hit or whether they affect missions, so don’t expect a scripted disaster event every few hours. But a GTA where the weather itself can make a getaway harder is a genuinely new idea for the series.

5. Wildlife: More Than 170 Species

What makes it stand out: Leonida’s animals live on land, in the air and under the sea, matching Florida’s real ecosystem.
Key data: Over 170 species, including more than 60 types of bird, over 30 land mammals, plus manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators.
Why it matters: It’s a big jump on GTA V and shows how much of Red Dead Redemption 2’s wildlife tech has carried across.

Rockstar’s Michael Kane told Game Informer the team wanted to “faithfully include” Florida’s “diverse animal ecosystem”, both inland and in the ocean. So yes, there are alligators in the swamps (the first trailer already showed one wandering into a convenience store). There are manatees in the shallows, flamingos, pelicans and dozens of bird species overhead.

For comparison, GTA V had a modest roster of dogs, cats, deer, cougars, sharks and a few birds. Red Dead Redemption 2 changed the game with around 200 species, and it looks like Rockstar has brought that ambition into a modern setting. The Extended Look even found time for a chihuahua in a purple tutu and fairy wings, which is about as Florida as it gets.

Scuba diving was shown in the Extended Look as well, so the underwater species aren’t just set dressing you’ll glimpse from a boat.

6. Story and Characters (Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos)

What makes it stand out: Two protagonists who work as a couple, rather than GTA V’s three separate criminals who kept bumping into each other.
Key data: Jason and Lucia are a Bonnie and Clyde-style duo who stumble into a statewide conspiracy after a bank job goes wrong; Lucia is the series’ first female lead in the modern 3D era.
Why it matters: Their relationship is the emotional spine of the game, and Rockstar has built the game around how the two of them depend on each other.

The first trailer opened on Lucia in a prison jumpsuit, talking to a parole officer, and it’s been clear since then that she’s at the centre of things. Jason came into focus with Trailer 2 in May 2025, which showed him as a former soldier trying, not very hard, to stay out of trouble in the Leonida Keys.

Put them together and you’ve got the classic lovers-on-the-run setup. The basic hook is that a botched heist drags the pair into something much bigger than a cash grab, a conspiracy that stretches across the state. That’s about as much as Rockstar has given away, and it’s probably all you want to know going in.

Tone-wise, the trailers suggest the usual GTA satire is alive and well, aimed this time at social media, viral clips and Florida Man headlines. But the scenes between Jason and Lucia in the Extended Look were quieter and more grounded than anything in GTA V. There’s a domestic safehouse sequence that plays almost like a relationship drama. If Rockstar can land that tone shift the way it did with Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2, this could be the series’ strongest story yet.

7. The Extended Look (27 August 2026, Netflix Then YouTube)

What makes it stand out: It was the first long look at actual GTA VI gameplay, and it premiered on a streaming service before YouTube.
Key data: Roughly 26 to 27 minutes, captured in-game on PS5; exclusive to Netflix for six hours from 3pm ET (8pm UK) on 27 August, then on Rockstar’s YouTube channel and website at 9pm ET (2am UK).
Why it matters: Before this, not a frame of proper gameplay had been officially released, which had fuelled months of nervous speculation.

For a long stretch of 2026, GTA VI fans were in a strange spot. They could pre-order the biggest game of the decade without having seen a single minute of anyone actually playing it. The Extended Look fixed that.

Rockstar split it into eight themed sections. It opens on what looks like an early mission, a pickup job that goes wrong. Jason and Lucia meet resistance inside a building, a gunfight breaks out, the police turn up and the pair shoot their way to a car. From there it moves through safehouse downtime, open-road driving, a robbery, a sprawling police chase and a siege across several floors of a high-rise.

Character switching was the big mechanical takeaway. You can flip between Jason and Lucia mid-mission within seconds, and one sequence had Lucia driving while Jason leaned out firing at pursuers. It looks smoother than GTA V’s three-way switch, which always had that pull-out-to-the-sky camera pause.

The quieter bits mattered too. Basketball. Scuba diving. Crowded beaches. Shops and nightclubs. And that chihuahua. Releasing it on Netflix first was a deliberate statement: Rockstar and Take-Two want this treated like a major entertainment event, not just a game launch.

8. UK Price and Editions (£69.99 Standard, £89.99 Ultimate)

What makes it stand out: In the US, GTA VI is one of the first major games to break the $70 barrier, but UK buyers got a pleasant surprise with no price rise over the usual £69.99.
Key data: £69.99 / $79.99 / €79.99 for the Standard Edition and £89.99 / $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition; pre-orders opened at midnight local time on 25 June 2026.
Why it matters: There are only two editions, with no collector’s or special edition, so the choice is simple.

Rockstar kept the line-up lean. You get Standard or Ultimate, and that’s it. The Ultimate Edition adds an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons and clothing, plus in-game shops, garages and vendors that unlock for Jason and Lucia as you move through the story’s chapters, rather than dumping everything on you at the start.

Every pre-order made before 20 November includes the Vintage Vice City Pack. That’s a 1955 Vapid Stanier sedan with a garage near Ocean Beach, retro outfits and hairstyles for both leads, and a weapon pattern that nods to the city’s 1980s past. Pre-order digitally on the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store and you also get a free month of GTA+, which in GTA Online’s current form includes a GTA$500,000 deposit and access to the GTA+ games library.

Shop around if you’re buying the boxed version. Some UK retailers have dipped slightly under the £69.99 RRP, though the digital stores are holding at full price.

9. Code in a Box and the 12 November Preload

What makes it stand out: The “physical” edition of the year’s biggest game contains no disc at all.
Key data: Retail copies are a download code in a standard PS5 or Xbox case; boxed copies start arriving on 12 November, the same day preloads open for everyone; the final install size hasn’t been confirmed.
Why it matters: You can’t resell or lend a code once it’s redeemed, and you’ll need fast broadband and plenty of free storage.

This one went down badly when Rockstar confirmed it in June. Physical collectors wanted a disc, and the “code in a box” approach means the boxed copy is effectively a digital licence with a nice case. Once you redeem it, it’s tied to your account.

Rockstar’s reasoning is size. Giving physical buyers a code a week early lets them preload from 12 November along with digital owners, spreading the download load across seven days rather than crushing PSN and Xbox Live at midnight on launch day. The game unlocks on 19 November.

How big is it? Rockstar hasn’t said. One leak has pointed to just under 200GB on PS5, but treat that as unconfirmed. Either way, clear some space now, especially on an Xbox Series S or an original launch PS5, where storage fills up fast.

10. Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album (34 Original Tracks, 19 November)

What makes it stand out: Instead of a licensed radio compilation, Rockstar and Atlantic Records have commissioned an album of brand-new songs.
Key data: Announced 17 September 2026; 34 original tracks; out 19 November on CD (£10.99), vinyl (£44.99) and a limited-edition vinyl set (£108.99).
Why it matters: Music has always been half of GTA’s identity, and this line-up puts it on a par with a major film soundtrack.

Six singles dropped with the announcement, and the names tell you the budget. Travis Scott’s “RHYNO”. Yung Lean’s “That’s It” with Future and Metro Boomin. Morgan Wallen’s “Last Thing You Need”. Rauw Alejandro’s “Macacoa 2000”. “Sexy Magic” from CA7RIEL and Paco Amoroso, PinkPantheress, Fred again.. and Etienne de Crécy. And, because why not, Keith Richards covering “Bright Lights, Big City”.

That spread from Latin pop to country to rap to a Rolling Stone is very deliberate. Vice City’s in-game radio has always mixed genres, and Rockstar is clearly building stations around these tracks. The licensed music in the game itself will still be far bigger than this album, but the album is the bit you can play in the car.

Interestingly, the soundtrack is getting the physical release the game itself isn’t. A vinyl box set, but no game disc. Make of that what you will.

11. Trailers, Records and Delays (December 2023 to November 2026)

What makes it stand out: Few games have been this public for this long before release, or broken this many viewing records along the way.
Key data: Trailer 1 (4 December 2023) passed 93 million YouTube views in 24 hours; Trailer 2 (May 2025) drew around 475 million views across platforms in its first day; release slipped from 2025 to 26 May 2026 and then to 19 November 2026.
Why it matters: The delays explain why the game has had almost three years of build-up, and why expectations are so high.

Rockstar announced GTA VI with a “coming 2025” card at the end of its first trailer. That slipped to a specific date, 26 May 2026, around the second trailer. Then, in November 2025, came the second delay, to 19 November 2026.

Rockstar’s statement at the time was blunt: “We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”

The waiting hasn’t hurt interest. Trailer 1 set a YouTube record for a non-music video in its first day, and Trailer 2 dwarfed it once you count every platform. Fans spent most of 2026 waiting for a third trailer that never came in the traditional sense; Rockstar went with the Netflix-premiered Extended Look instead.

The marketing calendar from here is guesswork. With preloads on 12 November, Rockstar is likely to share more in the run-up, but nothing else has been officially dated.

12. The Open Questions: PC and GTA Online

What makes it stand out: Two of the biggest parts of GTA V’s long life, the PC version and GTA Online, are both still unannounced for GTA VI.
Key data: No PC release date or announcement; no official GTA VI online mode announced; GTA Online launched two weeks after GTA V in 2013.
Why it matters: PC players face a long wait, and the online mode is likely to be where Take-Two makes most of its money over the next decade.

On PC, Take-Two’s line hasn’t changed. Asked whether the lack of a PC announcement was final, Zelnick said “the only thing that happens after the lack of an announcement is an announcement, I suppose, or a continuing lack of an announcement”. He added that Rockstar “has an approach to platforms which we’ve seen before, and they will make more announcements in due time”. History says that means later: GTA V reached PC in April 2015, about 19 months after console, and Red Dead Redemption 2 took about a year.

Online is murkier. Rockstar hasn’t announced anything, and every claimed window you’ll see, from “a month after launch” to “next year”, comes from leakers rather than the studio. What we do know is the pattern. GTA Online arrived on 1 October 2013, two weeks after GTA V. Red Dead Online’s beta landed about a month after Red Dead Redemption 2. The GTA+ pre-order bonus suggests the current GTA Online isn’t going anywhere soon, either.

Our advice? Buy GTA VI for the single-player game Rockstar has actually shown. Treat everything else as a bonus.

Is GTA 6 Worth the Wait?

On everything shown so far, GTA VI looks like the most detailed open world Rockstar has made, with a smaller, more personal story at its centre and a lot of new tech holding it all together. The bigger questions are about delivery: whether the 19 November date holds, how it runs on base consoles, and how big that download really is. If you want it on day one in the UK, pre-ordering on PS5 or Xbox for £69.99 secures the Vintage Vice City Pack and lets you preload a week early. We’ll have more as Rockstar releases it, and you can see what else is coming in our upcoming games roundup, or read our Marvel’s Wolverine review if you need something to play until then.
