Video games were mostly played on consoles or PCs. But with the advent of smartphones, these two platforms have taken a hit. According to eMarketer, nearly two-thirds of gamers all over the world now prefer mobile games because they can play on the go.

Why mobile gaming has the edge?

Given the power of the modern processors and the graphics support in the smartphones, it is hard to deny that the gaming experience is reaching its peak level in the mobile gaming industry. Plus, the fact that you can play hundreds of games on the go gives an added advantage to avid gamers. Many online sites allow the players to choose from different genres of games, complete with unique storylines, gameplay, and mechanics. A prime example is freegamepick, which has become the go-to destination of gamers who want to find an extensive collection of free games.

The change in technology in mobile phones has allowed developers to come up with games featuring in-depth stories, massive online 3D worlds, strong character development, and immersive experience through virtual and augmented reality.

The comeback of PC and gaming consoles

Although the market shift towards mobile gaming is encouraging for mobile game developers, everything is still not lost for gamers who love PC games and gaming consoles. Sony is preparing a console-free PlayStation that will offer cloud gaming services. This will run on multiple platforms and won’t tie the player down only in front of the TV screen.

Cloud gaming platforms will allow the players to access their favorite games from multiple devices like computers, laptops, TVs, and most importantly, mobile phones. You can resume a match from the stage where you last left it at home.

It is highly unlikely that smartphone games will entirely wash out PC and console games. But the competition it now provides is giving a chance for the gaming industry to expand; something that gamers wanted for a long time now.

Pricing of games

Price is another factor that keeps mobile games ahead of consoles and PC games. Imagine having to spend hundreds of bucks on a console, and then a few more to buy your favorite titles. But with mobile games, most of the apps are free. The maximum you need to spend maybe is a few bucks on in-app purchases for a better gaming experience. In fact, game developers are trying to provide the best gaming experience by developing free-to-play models where players don’t have to spend a penny to play and progress through the games.

Although the competition among mobile, PC and console games is fierce, it is only improving the gaming industry. There are plenty of gamers who believe that mobile gaming is not for hardcore gamers, while many think that you’re a part of the gaming community regardless of your preferred gaming device. It’s likely that the debate about whether mobile gaming is more popular than PC and gaming consoles will continue until one wipes out the rest, which is far from happening in the near future.
