Following the overwhelming success of 2009’s Avatar, writer and director James Cameron was confirmed to produce three subsequent sequels to the sci-fi epic, later this increased to four. However after lengthy delays with pre-production, citing issues with scripting and the design process – it almost looked like the planned continuation of the Na’vi story was up in smoke. With updates on the series seemingly emerging on a sporadic basis since Avatar’s release.
Today on Avatar‘s official Facebook page, the self-proclaimed ‘King of The World’ announced that 20th Century Fox have confirmed the slated release dates for the four Avatar sequels. Posting a picture of himself along with his production team, as they prepare to get underway with the long journey ahead. Casting news is still up in the air, however it has been reported that both Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are expected to return. Along with Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver.
The four projects will be produced concurrently, with the first film scheduled for December 18th 2020, followed by December 17th 2021 for Avatar 3, December 20th 2024 for Avatar 4, and December 19th 2025 for Avatar 5.
Released in 2009, Avatar was nominated for 9 Academy Awards, and won three for Best Cinematography, Visual Effects and Art Direction.
