Supergirl S03E19 – The Fanatical

The Church of Supergirl, aka the Cult of Rao, have been transformed, no longer worshiping Supergirl, but now the honourable Reign. An ex-fanatic seeks asylum within Catco, unveiling plans of the cult to bomb the city to Kara and Jimmy. Trying to stop their plans, Supergirl and the Guardian confront them, however in a moment of oversight, Jimmy takes his makes off and reveals his identity to the extremists. As the episode progresses, the discussion into serious topics continue. Jimmy opens up about being black in today’s society, the importance of Guardian and what exposing his identity might do, not only to him, but to all the black people in Capital City. Furthermore, J’onn continues to worry about his father, forgetting memory after memory. For a show centred around hope and joy, it is wonderful to see very difficult subject matters being tackled, to see exactly what the themes of the show are at the end. Ruby has not been the best addition to the show, but getting to see her struggles, alongside M’yrnn, and for them to connect was a beautiful moment that the three other Arrowverse shows would not have been able to tackle as well.

Heading straight into the ritual, Mon-El features his glasses once again to trick the cult and to stop them midway through a sacrificial rite. Sending a beacon to Kara, Supergirl comes in to save the day with her words and lasers. Even though they stopped the fanatics now, we see the convicted priest of Rao out in open daylight. He might be heading to Reign, who is awake inside Lena’s lab, getting stronger with Pestilence and Purity’s powers growing in her.
