Theodore Melfi’s spage programme biopic Hidden Figures was the surprise winner at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards last night, which was dominated by anger over Donald Trump’s policy on foreign immigrants.

The film – which stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Jim Parsons, Kirsten Dunst, Mahershala Ali, and Glen Powell – claimed the top prize of Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture, beating the likes of Hacksaw Ridge, Manchester by the Sea, and more. Netflix’s Stranger Things and Orange is the New Black retained equal awards in their respective television categories, meanwhile Claire Foy and John Lithgow of The Crown took home wins for their performances in the streaming service’s period drama.

Speeches from all winners targeted Trump’s position on the banning of Syrian refugees, and the suspension of all nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries for 120 days. Among the winners was Mahershala Ali for his supporting role in Moonlight; a Muslim man himself.

Kenneth Longeran’s sobering drama was perhaps the biggest snub of the evening; leaving empty handed despite four nominations as Denzel Washington swooped in to claim Casey Affleck’s prize for his work in his directorial feature, Fences.
