If there’s one actress who is the quintessential veteran to go to when portraying a historical character then it’s the truly wonderful Judi Dench. Having provided the acting talent to bring to life Queen Elizabeth and indeed Queen Victoria – among many others – throughout her prestigious career, Judi Dench is set to once again step into the shoes of Victoria in Stephen Frears’ upcoming venture, Victoria & Abdul.
Telling the story of Victoria’s later years as the monarchy, Victoria & Abdul highlights the relationship she had with an Indian clerk named Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal) that was essentially frowned upon by her peers. It’s a story that could well get plenty of awards buzz, especially with the duo of Frears and Dench working together once more, and you can watch the first trailer below.
The extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria’s (Academy Award winner Judi Dench) remarkable rule. When Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favour with the Queen herself. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy. As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity.
Victoria & Abdul is set for UK release on 15th September.
