2016 has seen the world of entertainment and politics collide in a big way – but as Trump’s upcoming Presidency dominates everything from Twitter to Broadway, the film industry seems to be looking back. Netflix’s Barry, a film about Barack Obama’s first year at Columbia University, joins the slew of documentaries, television shows and films about America’s first African American President.

Judging by the recently-released trailer, Barry takes more of a political slant on Obama’s history than Southside with You, a romantic drama focussed on Michelle and Barack Obama’s relationship also released this year. Joining a slate of recent Netflix successes celebrating diversity, including The Get Down and Luke Cage, Barry promises to be a prescient and fascinating look at Barack Obama’s youth. Starring Devon Terrell and directed by Vikram Gandhi, Barry will be released on December 16th exclusively on Netflix.
