Netflix have debuted a collection of stills from their forthcoming movie Mute. Check them out here! See Paul Rudd And Alexander Skarsgard In First Images For Mute

Netflix has released the first – intriguing – new images for their upcoming original film, Mute, this week, which show an odd-looking Paul Rudd and Alexander Skarsgard up to no good in a futuristic world.

From Moon and Source Code director Duncan Jones, Mute has been in development for quite a long time. The setting hinted at in the images will surely spark some interest, with the film taking place in Berlin in 2052, but the appearances of Rudd and Skarsgard even more so. If Rudd’s moustache didn’t convince me otherwise, I would have thought that these pictures were cut straight from the upcoming Blade Runner sequel with the noir setting and neon bursts of colour, but this sci-fi thriller is going to be something very different.

Alas, Gosling is nowhere to be seen, but Jones has reunited with his Moon cinematographer Gary Shaw, as the film is intended to take place in the same universe. Yes, you read into that correctly: Mute is going to be the second film in a proposed trilogy, so fans of Moon have something to look forward to with this apparent sequel.

How is it going to fit into the franchise exactly? We can’t be sure yet. All we know so far is that Skarsgard plays a mute bartender, who lost the ability to speak after a childhood accident, who goes looking for his girlfriend (Seyneb Saleh) in the city’s seedy, neon underworld when she suddenly disappears. Justin Theroux is also set to co-star, working alongside Rudd as a pair of American surgeons who serve as Skarsgard’s only clue.

With Moon being set in space (funnily enough!), I can’t wait to see how the two films will link together, and how a third film will be set up to complete the trilogy. After the lack of success of Jones’ summer blockbuster, Warcraft: The Beginning, last year, as well, let’s hope that this release puts the brilliant director back on track.

A Netflix Original film, the film is due to be released in all territories sometimes this year.

Set in the near-future, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) is a bartender living in the pulsing city of Berlin. Because of a childhood accident, Leo lost the ability to speak and the only good thing in his life is his beautiful girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh). When she vanishes without a trace, Leo’s search for her takes him deep into the city’s seedy underbelly. A pair of wise-cracking American surgeons (Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux) are the only recurring clue and Leo is forced to take on this teeming underworld in order to find his love.
