Sad news arrives today as Academy Award-winning screenwriter and author William Peter Blatty has passed away. He was 89.

Best known for penning the 1971 novel The Exorcist and the globally-acclaimed 1973 movie adaptation which earned him an Oscar, Peter Blatty also provided further contributions to the silver screen, including scripts for A Shot in the DarkThe Man from the Diner’s Club, Promise Her Anything, What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? and Darling Lili.

The news of his passing was announced on Twitter by William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist.
