It has been announced at CinemaCon that writer-director Alex Garland’s hotly-anticipated Annihilation has been pushed back until 2018.

The film – which had appeared on Filmoria’s 20 Alternative Movies You Must See in 2017 – will be distributed by Paramount Pictures, who made the executive decision. It’ll serve as the follow-up to Garland’s critically-acclaimed 2014 debut, Ex_Machina.

It wasn’t all bad for fans however, as they were treated to some first-look footage from the film, which has been thunderously received. Annihilation features a fantastic cast including Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, and Gina Rodriguez, and it details a rich narrative in which a biologist heads into an environmental disaster zone, armed with three fellow scientists, who are all in search of her husband. The beloved partner went missing on a similar expedition, so past tragedies could replicate themselves again.

When exactly in 2018 the film will arrive is currently unknown, but we’re hoping it’ll be sooner rather than later…
