After a shocking teaser that suggested Lightning McQueen’s racing day have come to a screeching halt, the anticipation for the oft-maligned Cars franchise reached a fever-pitch. After teasing the main character in a horrific accident, what new direction would Pixar take the franchise? Despite the lack of critical acclaim, the universe has proven to be extremely popular amongst children, and merchandise sales have been astronomical.
Today, the folks at Disney-Pixar have revealed a new trailer for Cars 3 that reveals a far less edgy side than the previous teasers suggested. The focus of the trailer is Lightning McQueen’s legacy, as he appears training for the chance to be world champion one last time. McQueen’s (voiced by Owen Wilson) latest rival is the super fast Jackson Storm (voiced by Armie Hammer).
Its disappointing to see the darkness of the initial teaser disappear, as it would have been an exciting new angle for a tired franchise. Still, it looks like director Brian Fee has gone with a far more character-centric approach than Cars 2, which is widely viewed as Pixar’s worst film.
Also featuring the voice talents of Bonnie Hunt, Cheech Marin, Larry the Cable Guy, and Tony Shaloub, Cars 3 races into UK cinemas 14th July.
