With Their Finest making it into the top five at the British box office, Gemma Arterton is returning to the Second World War in Summerland, from award winning playwright Jessica Swale.
As well as writing the screenplay, Swale will be venturing behind the camera for her debut as a director in this story of a child evacuee. Arterton plays the lead role of Alice, who has an evacuee boy placed in her care but decides to be rid of him. Gradually, the two become closer and he enables her to unlock the secrets of her past, leading her to realise that sometimes imagination can set you free.
Swale’s theatre credits include Blue Stockings, which premiered in 2013, and Nell Gwynn, which also starred Arterton, and won her the Olivier Award for best new comedy in 2016.
Gemma Arterton commented, “Jessica gave me a wonderful gift in the character of Nell Gwynn, and she’s done it again with Alice in Summerland. Jessica is an exciting new voice in film and I’m very privileged to be able to work with her as a director. She has impeccable instincts, a clear vision and inspires confidence in everyone around her.”
There’s no more news on the cast at the moment, but we can expect to see Arterton back on our screens later in the year in British drama, The Escape, when she stars alongside Dominic Cooper and Frances Barber.
